This Week At Nakkertok

I don’t have much to say about this week so here are the practice schedules

Wednesday: T2T meet at Nakkertok south with Classic gear. Race Ready Meeting: We will be having a mandatory race ready meeting next Wednesday Jan 20th at 6:45pm for parents of athletes in the Pink, Orange, Yellow, Blue and Green groups. This meeting is extremely important and we ask that at least one parent per athlete be in attendance.

Saturday/Sunday: Coupe Skinouk races. Nakkertok coaches will be on hand to provide grip suggestions and I will be sending out suggested glide wax the night before.

...But I do have a lot to say about next week....

Next Week At Nakkertok

****The Following Information is for Juvenile and older only****

Easterns is upon us! Jan 30 and 31st Nakkertok will be invaded by races from across the country for the most competitive races outside of nationals for Juniors. Nakkertok has won the Eastern Canadians banner 3 years running and I hope we can keep it for another year. There is a lot of work to be done to make sure everyone has fast skis and is well prepared for the race. Please read on with care....

Parents: There are a number of jobs and duties at Easterns that we need help with. Below is a description of these tasks. If you would like to take on any of these roles please email me ASAP.  The jobs are as follows….

Bib Distributors (2-3people): This is a big job. You will collect all of the Nakkertok bibs from the race organizers and distribute them to the team. Ask the athletes to immediately put their bibs on once they receive them (around the neck is fine). This job will be performed from Johannsenhus on the Saturday and Sunday morning.

Johannsenhus Support: We need one or two people at the Johannsehus throughout the morning to keep the fire going supervise athletes and remind them of start times.

Waxing Support – There is a great need for help waxing and preparing skis. We will start this process on Friday afternoon and require help Saturday (both before the race and after) and on Sunday morning.  The break down is as follows. Please email me when you are available to help out. Also we are in need of extra wax benches and forms. If you are able to provide this equipment please contact me ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Day

What we are doing

Friday Afternoon (2:00pm start)

Putting Base Wax on the skis. I will be testing around noon and we should be ready to start gliding skis at 2:00pm

Saturday (6:00am start)

Morning: Testing covers and structure and applying our best wax to the skis.

Afternoon: (1:00pm start) Applying base wax  and powers to skate race skis for Sunday

Sunday (6:00am start)

Applying Grip wax and touch ups to skis

Feeds: Parents with athletes in the Junior Men and Senior men  Category, help will be needed to provide feeds for the Saturday race.

The Schedule for Easterns week

Tuesday: L2C Meet at Nakkertok south at 6:30 with skate gear. Today’s practice we will be doing a short but tough interval set. Classic and Skate Race skis for the weekend will be collected at this practice. Race skis must be waxed (LF or CH 7- purple), scraped, labeled (with your name and category on a  piece tape) and with your grip zones clearly marked. We will not accept skis that are not properly prepared.

Wednesday: T2T Meet at Nakkertok south at 6:30 with skate gear. Classic and Skate race skis for the weekend will be collected at this practice. Race skis must be waxed (LF or CH 7- Blue), scraped, labeled (with your name and category on tape) and with your grip zones clearly marked. We will not accept skis that are not properly prepared.

Friday: Race-course preski. The Eastern’s race course will open for training Friday afternoon at 1:00pm. All juniors/seniors racing this weekend must come out the race course at some point on Friday afternoon to ski the course.   Coaches will be on hand to help you out if you have any questions about the race course.  Why should you ski the course Friday? You will be able to view the completed stadium start/finish area, course markers will be posted and the waxing area will be set up. It is important that you know exactly where to go to retrieve your race skis, what the start and finish area looks like and exactly how the course is signed and marked (minor changes to racecourses occur often while organizers are setting up).

Friday Night: After the coaches meeting I will email out the start times, and any additional course instructions as soon as I can. Please check your email frequently during the evening.

Saturday: Skate interval race. On Saturday (and Sunday) please ski into Johannsenhus from the Bradford Bunker with all of your equipment for the day. Johannsenhus is not the warmest of venues so make sure you bring warm clothes.   All of the information I have about these races can be found at http://nakkertok.ca/en/race-events/easterns-2010 . Arrive at least one and a half hours before the start of your race.  Start your warm up from Johannsenhus area and as your start time approaches head over to the Nakkertok wax tent to retrieve your race skis.  Remember you will not be able to ski directly to the stadium as parts of trails will be closed for the races. Race skis will be ready for testing 45min before your race start.

Saturday Evening/Night:  Look for an email similar to Friday evening’s with last minute details.

Sunday: Classic mass start. Same procedure as Saturday. You are responsible for grip waxing your own warm up skis, there will be no Nakkertok grip waxes available for warm up skis.

Please re-read this email carefully, email me back if you can help out, and remember there it is very important for juniors to ski their course sometime on Friday afternoon!

Midget Aged Skiers: Stay tuned for info from Pav.

That’s all for this week

Mike

This Week At Nakkertok

Hello All

I have just returned from snowy Silver Star to snowy Ottawa. Life couldn’t be much better. Sliver Star was an excellent trip; we had great snow and very competitive racing.  Racing at altitude is always a difficult task, but Nakkertok athletes managed to post their first two podium results of the season last weekend. With a large gang heading off to T-Bay this weekend for an OCUP, I am sure that number will grow quickly. Good luck to everyone!

So what do we have on tap for this week? Skiing and lots of it. Conditions in the park seem to be improving daily and I am excited for my first on snow practice with the team this year.

To the news of the week...

YUKON SKI TEAM COMING TO THE EASTERNS!! (Wrong Email Contact Last Week)

Great News, the Yukon Ski Team will be travelling to Cantley for the Easterns.  We have the opportunity to billet our northern friends.

We are looking for families to host a minimum of 2 athletes during the Easterns.  For ease of organization we are looking for billets in the southern end of the city (Hunt Club/Riverside, Alta Vista and Old Ottawa South).  There will be approximately 15 athletes/coaches.

As billets, we are asking families to provide beds, food and travel to and from Nakkertok.

If you are able to open your home to these athletes please contact Jan Downing at 613-736-8323 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it (this time we got it right).

This Week At Nakkertok

There is snow and skiing to be had. Check out the xcottawa website for pictures from P10 today. Most of the parkway sadly remains snow free. We are this close to that first rock ski of the season. If you haven’t already get your boards prepped and ready to rock for that first ski of the season do so soon!

News of the Week

MORE Safety Volunteers on needed Saturday mornings.

In of snow for December, we did not yet request for Safety Volunteers after Nov. Unfortunately it looks like we will need some help for at least the first week or so. If you can volunteer on the parkway on Saturdays in December please send an e-mail to Lyle Fair at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The safety volunteers for 5 Dec are Cathy Cummings and Kerri Weller. Thank you!

First racing trip of the season! 12 Nakkertok athletes are off to Silver Star to compete in NorAm cup races on Dec 12th and 13th. The group starts heading out this week, with the majority leaving on Sunday (including myself). Keep your eyes on zone4.ca for results.

Nakkerwear: There will be pick-up times for the ski suits on Wednesday December 2nd at practice and again on Saturday December 5th at P8 during practice.  If the jackets have arrived, they will also be available for pick-up.

Parents and skiers, please be aware and take a minute to review the new Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines that were developed for the Racing Program.  These guidelines are intended to give guidance to coaches and parents on away trips in the hopes of keeping everyone as healthy as possible this ski season.  Please read the guidelines via the website http://nakkertok.ca/en/resources/documents-and-forms/category/3

Midget Overnight Training Camp: Final reminder about the Midget Overnight Training Camp that is happening this weekend at Nakkertok South.

This is a fabulously fun camp  in which our Nakkertok athletes ages 12 & 13 get to simulate an overnight trip/training camp.

We don't want to ruin the surprises but there will be an orienteering adventure, a guest speaker, a special presentation, and the perennial classic; night time capture the flag. Your athlete will not want to miss this as it is often the highlight of the pre-race season.

The registration deadline is Wednesday Dec 2.
