Parents' Responsibilities

E-mail Print PDF

·        Support and foster a positive skiing experience. The primary goal of our Jackrabbit/Bunnyrabbit program is to have a positive skiing experience for each child at all times, with both parent(s) and Leader(s) working together to achieve this goal.   Parental program support is necessary to create a successful program and enthusiastic ‘rabbits’.  This participation is very different from a municipal recreation program where you can just drop-off your child (ren).

·        Provide (rent/buy) appropriate and properly fitting equipment and clothing for cross-country skiing.  (see our bulletin on ski equipment and clothing for children)

·        ARRIVE ON TIME!!!! Arrange to leave your residence 45 minutes to 1 hour before your child’s (ren’s) class begins at Nakkertok South (add 15 minutes if the class is held at Nakkertok North).  This will give you enough time to travel to the parking lot, unload your vehicle, get your equipment on and then ski to the class meeting place.  If you are late, ski with your child until you find the class.  At the end of each class remember to pick up your child on time at the arranged class rendezvous spot.  Bunnyrabbit classes are 1.5 hours long and Jackrabbit classes are 2 hours in length.

·        Participate with classes: When requested by the class leaders cheerfully ski with the class.  This may happen more than once during the season especially if your child is a reluctant skier, or is feeling tired/sick/cold.

·        Assist with scheduled/unscheduled program activities; class set-up and takedown (signs and equipment), fire, and canteen operation.

·        Inform class leader of how your child is feeling on that day (tired? ill? cranky?)

·        Telephone your class leader if your child cannot attend the class.

·        Bring a snack and a drink for your child for apres-ski.  ·

·        Ski for fun with your child (ren)!!!  If you want your child (ren) to improve in ability and enthusiasm as a cross-country skier and improve their fitness, mere attendance at our Jackrabbit classes is not enough.  Many families have lunch/snack and go on a family ski before or after class.  You can also ski at Nakkertok North or in Gatineau Park.  Have them practice the skills that they are learning with you.  You will be surprised how quickly they can become good ski-companions, and how soon they’ll leave you behind.

Remember that you remain responsible for the supervision of your child at all times while at Nakkertok. Nakkertok volunteers (class leaders, co-ordinators) are not screened.
