· Have a lesson and season plan
· Be familiar with the level that you are co-instructing and how this level should be evaluated by using the evaluation rubric.
· Be familiar with trails – always bring a trail map.
· Classes will meet in the stadium area near the Ski Chalet.
· Contact the parents before the first calss. Points to cover:
-Does the child have relevant allergies/medical conditions?
- All classes begin on time.
- All equipment should be labelled.
- Children should bring a snack (nut free) and drink.
- The majority of classes have 2 instructors. It is recommended to have an additional parent assist each week.
- Parents need to notify the instructor ig they are planning on taking their child prior to the end of the class.
Evaluations
A detailed description of the Nakkertok Bunnyrabbit & Jackrabbit evaluation matrix can be found here.
Please ensure that you do the following for each child in your class:
1) Have a 100m timed result (Jackrabbits only).
2) Take notes on areas of improvement and strengths.
3) Make not of what techniques have been attained for the level.
4) Get an estimate on the number of hours skied outside the class (Jackrabbits only).
This information is used to determine next year's level and the LTS awards attained. It is felt that some techniques take more than one Nakkertok ski season to fully grasp. Remember that it is more important to have very good skills than to move on to a higher level where a child could experience frustration the next season.
Structuring Lessons
When you’re structuring your lessons, please take the following into account:
1) Nakkertok North is classic technique only.
2) Don't try to accomplish too much in a lesson.
3) Compared to older kids, younger kids have a shorter attention span and need more activities that are shorter in duration.
4) Recommendations for using poles.
-Bunnyrabbits: no poles
-JR Level 1: mostly no poles.
-JR Level 2: gradually increase use from class to class.
-JR Levels 3 & 4: regular usage starting at class #1. Note that these levels are skate and classic, therefore the children will need the appropriate equipment. For younger children, this can mean a pair of waxable skis and two sets of poles of the correct lengths.-Games: no poles.5) All instructors are responsible for knowing the trails. Carry a map at all times.
6) Make use of the many supplies such as pilons, balls, flags, etc. kept in the shed at the east end of the stadium.
- Limit formal instruction.
- Mix play and discovery into your plans.
- Teach herringbone right away. Nakkertok is rolling terrain.
- Don't go too far away from the stadium as you have to make it back.
- Snack time can be inside or outside. You may find that it is good to incorporate a story or story telling at this time to maintain your group's interest and to ease the transition from onw activity to the next.
Class Cancellations
The decision to cancel classes is made by the day co-ordinators and learn-to-ski directors. Instructors cannot cancel classes. If classes are cancelled, the lead instructor will receive a call from the day co-ordinator by 8:00 am (for Sat.) or 10:30 am (for Sun.). It will be your responsibility to call (not email) your co-instructors and the parents. Classes may be cancelled for the following reasons (but are not limited to):
- Too cold (below -20C without wind chill)
- Too icy - too dangerous to ski/drive
- Too much snow- too dangerous to drive
Nakkertok North
1) There are only classic trails. Please bring your classic equipment.2) Please leave additional time to get there. From Ottawa, it takes an additional 20 min driving time and 10-15 min to ski from the parking lot ot the meeting area.3) The meeting area is located in front of the lower cabin. There will be no class signs. Please look for your instructor.4) If you arrive late, the parking lot may be full and you will have to park on the side of the highway. The road is busy so be careful when walking along it.5) There is a snowmobile trail that runs along the highway and the parking lot. Use caution when crossing it.6) There is an upper and lower cabin available. If you're the first on site, please open them up and start a fire in the stove to warm them up.
